17th IPPT_TWINN Workshop on Injection Overmolding

The two-day IPPT_TWINN workshop, which highlighted the latest trends and challenges in polymer processing, with a focus on overmolding technology, was successfully concluded on 25-26 February 2025 at the Department of Polymer Engineering of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME). The participants were introduced to the theoretical and practical aspects of overmolding, including bonding mechanisms – from chemical to mechanical – and the key impact of material selection on the final product quality. Various overmolding technologies, such as multi-component injection molding, Core-back technology and sandwich technology, were also presented, providing a comprehensive overview of modern methods and their applications in industry. Special attention was paid to the role of simulation tools, such as Moldex3D, which enable process optimization and product quality improvement through accurate modeling. Despite the progress in this field, challenges remain in predicting complex phenomena such as air entrapment and hot spots, highlighting the need for further development and integration of experimental data. The workshop also served as a platform for discussing future research directions. The 17th IPPT_TWINN workshop also confirmed its role as a key event for disseminating and exchanging knowledge and promoting innovation in the field of polymer processing, with a focus on a future shaped by sustainable and efficient solutions.
